Landon Student Takes to the Skies to Help Others

A sophomore at Landon School in Bethesda has taken to the skies to deliver personal protective equipment to small hospitals throughout Virginia.

T.J. Kim, 16, of McLean, Va., decided to use the time when his school and afterschool activities are closed due to COVID-19 to help out. However, he said, he still is doing plenty of schoolwork.

Since the end of March, he has delivered equipment to a few of the seven small hospitals throughout Virginia. His goal is to help all seven. He has flown such items as gloves, shoe covers, masks, eye wear and hand sanitizer.

“At Landon, community service is really emphasized,” said Kim, who dreams of going to the Naval Academy and becoming a pilot.

So he decided to combine his love of flying to assist others. “I saw a need, and I just wanted to help,” said Kim, who plays lacrosse at Landon.

His father helps him collect the items, which they gather from the neighborhood, he said in the video.

In the video, Kim takes time to thank all the doctor’s and nurses “on the front line,” noting, “I just want to help them and serve them and that’s what I am going to do.”

His private school posted his achievements on Facebook, noting that T.J. was working hard helping hospitals in rural areas.
