Korean Service Center Works to Bring Community Together (Video)

The Korean Community Service Center of Montgomery County is working to help empower and connect local immigrants.

MyMCMedia’s Valerie Bonk has the story of how the organization is reaching out to the Korean community in the area.

“For me, working here is a very very rewarding thing because as an immigrant family member I can feel the same difficulty and same situation many Korean immigrants are experiencing here,” said Youryun Lee, Program Director at the Korean Community Service Center of Greater Washington.

Lee helps the Korean Community Service Center reach more than 4,000 residents in Montgomery County. The non-profit’s mission is to empower Asian Americans and new immigrants through social services and education.

“When I saw that I am improving their lives and I helped connect them to other important services, it’s very rewarding,” Lee said.

I felt that I was lucky to have a lot of benefits by working for international organizations and Korean government agency so I figured that this is time I can contribute and give back to the community,” said Julia Chang, a social services case manager at the  Korean Community Service Center of Greater Washington.

The organization received more than $90,000 in County grants this year, including money to help with counseling services for victims of domestic violence – cases that they see often.

“Because of a cultural issues many Korean immigrants they don’t report their ‘dv’ issues to the police department,” Lee said. “Sometimes they are afraid when they are making a police report that they will be deported because the immigration system is very complicated and they have some fear. When we found the great need from the Korean community we started this program and we always exceed our outcome because it’s really in great need.”

“A lot of Korean immigrants even those who lived here a long time they have still cultural barriers and extreme language barriers,” Chang said.
