Kentlands Market Square Parking Changes in the Works

Kentlands Monday Morning

Center Point Way is one of the streets where parking will be extended to 90-minutes for visitors.

Gaithersburg city officials are changing the parking rules in Kentlands Market Square after some complaints were received about the enforcement of 30-minute and 60-minute parking spaces along three streets in the downtown district.

At the July 21 City Council meeting, Economic Development Director Tom Lonergan reported that staff is recommending changes to the street parking rules on Market Street East, Market Street West and Center Point Way from a timed limit of 30 and 60 minutes to 90 minutes, between the hours of 8 a.m. – 6 p.m., Monday-Saturday. Parking is free in downtown Kentlands and not metered.

Lonergan said he met with about 15 business owners about the parking situation in this area.

According to Lonergan, visitors to the downtown district need more time than previously allotted to run errands, dine out at lunchtime, visit the doctor or even get a haircut. He called the 90 minutes, a compromise

The city’s elected leaders agreed with his recommendations.

According to Lonergan, about 100 spaces will be impacted by the changes.

His recommendations follow a review of the Market Square parking scene after some complaints were received from some residents who were ticketed in the downtown area.

Enforcement will continue during the day, Lonergan said, but under the new rules.

Staff will provide a status update on the impact of the parking changes in about six months, Lonergan added.
