Kentlands-Lakelands 5K Set for Aug. 31
The Kentlands-Lakelands 5K race is set for August 31 in downtown Kentlands.
The event, which has grown to be the largest 5K Race event in Montgomery County, is hosted by the non-profit Kentlands Community Foundation in partnership with the City of Gaithersburg.
The Labor Day weekend event includes a 5K Run and Walk, two Kids Fun Runs, and the well-renowned Post-Race Merchant Expo & Festival in Market Square Plaza, bringing over 4,000 participants to Kentlands Downtown. The 5K Race has grown in size consistently each year with over 1,200 participants. Half of the proceeds from the 2012 race was donated to three charities, including the summer camp program in Gaithersburg, The Dwelling Place, and Maryland Senior Olympics. This year the Kentlands Community Foundation will donate a portion of the proceeds to The Delores Swoyer Summer Camp Scholarship Fund, The Dwelling Place and McPaw.
The USA Track & Field certified loop course winds through Lakelands and Kentlands equally, starting and finishing on Main Street behind Market Square Plaza. The course was designed to give participants the opportunity to experience the best in new urbanist communities and passes by many civic landmarks. Featuring two water stops and live entertainment along the route, the course requires 60 volunteer Course Marshals to keep it clear and safe from traffic.
Online registration at Kentlands Community Foundation website ends noon on August 29. Packet pick-up, walk-in registration and Course Marshall packet pick-up is available from 3 to 8 p.m. on August 29 at Stiles Dentistry (333 Main Street, Kentlands) and August 30 at Fleet Feet (Kentlands Square Shopping Center, Kentlands). Race day registration at Market Square Plaza runs from 6:30 to 7:45 a.m.
