Katz Introduces Outdoor Smoking Ban

Councilmember Sidney Katz introduced legislation Tuesday that would prohibit smoking in a restaurant’s outdoor seating area.

“In general, most people are in agreement with this legislation,” Katz told reporters Tuesday. “That does not mean that that will continue to be, but in general that’s what I’ve heard from constituents.”

Here are excerpts from what he told the media:

Montgomery County was one of the first jurisdictions to pass a public smoking ban in 2003. Since then, the county has restricted smoking in parks and on bus stops, and prohibited e-cigarettes wherever smoking is forbidden.

You can find the staff report on the bill here. A public hearing has been tentatively scheduled for Oct. 23.
