JustArt Social Justice Video
This winter the city of Gaithersburg High School Student Union partnered with the International Cultural Center (ICC) for JustArt, a unique social justice program addressing the issue of alienation. Using music, photography and spoken word-poetry-lyric, the students collaborated to produce digital public service announcements.
Receiving Student Service Learning hours for their participation, 36 students participated in two three-hour sessions. The first session guided the young people through the artistic mediums of music, photography and spoken word-poetry-lyric. The second focused on professional video editing to convert creative concepts into public service videos. The works can be viewed on YouTube below.
“This project provided a unique opportunity for students to discover new and artistic means of self-expression,” said Community Facility Manager and Student Union Coordinator Maura Dinwiddie. “The ICC artists were extraordinary and did an amazing job encouraging students to leave their comfort zones and learn things. It was a rare opportunity for the youth to perform community service through art and learn the power of digital media for social justice.”
