Julian Castro Speaks at Affordable Housing Summit; Leggett Honored

Julian Castro, the Housing and Urban Development Secretary under President Barack Obama, spoke at Friday’s Affordable Housing Summit at the Bethesda North Marriott Convention Center.

We spoke with him briefly about his message, making sure to get in a couple of political questions:

The event included a surprise honor for County Executive Ike Leggett. The outgoing county executive gave a brief story about growing up in the house, one of 13 children, whose family lived in a three-room house.

He described the importance of housing, “a place in which we could in fact to rest our heads.”

“For me as county executive all of these years I wanted to make sure the most vulnerable in our community had that same option,” Leggett said.
