Judge Gives Life Without Parole for Students’ Murders

Jose Canales-Yanez | MCPD

Jose Canales-Yanez was sentenced to life without parole for the murders of two Northwest High School students last year.

Canales-Yanez insisted he was innocent. Circuit Court Judge David Boynton disagreed imposing Maryland’s harshest punishment.

A jury convicted Canales-Yanez for the June 5 murders of Shadi Najjar and Artem Ziberov, two Northwest High School students who had been lured to Gallery Court in Montgomery Village, and killed.

State’s Attorney John McCarthy said 40 shell casings in and around Najjar’s blue Honda Civic.

“This community was robbed of the gifts of these two men,” State’s Attorney John McCarthy said at a news conference after the sentencing.

Both victims, teenagers, were to graduate from the high school the day after they were murdered. The ruse that lured them to Gallery Court, a quiet cul-de-sac, was to buy an extra graduation ticket that Najjar was selling.

Canales-Yanez was the first defendant in the killing to be tried and sentenced.

Three others are charged in the killing: Rony Alexander Galicia of Germantown, Edgar Garcia-Gaona of Gaithersburg and Roger Garcia of in Germantown.

Their trials are to start Oct. 26.
