Jud Ashman Selected as Gaithersburg’s Next Mayor
Gaithersburg City Councilmember Jud Ashman, who is well known as the founder of the Gaithersburg Book Festival, may soon be the city’s next mayor.
At an executive session on Oct. 6, Ashman was selected “conditionally” by City Councilmembers to serve as the city’s next mayor until the 2015 municipal election. Ashman has served on the City Council since 2007, or for seven years.
This development follows Mayor Sidney Katz’s decision to submit his conditional resignation because he is running unopposed for the District 3 County Council seat in the general election on Nov. 4. City officials said if Katz is elected to the County Council, Ashman will be sworn in as Mayor on Monday, November 10.
“I am honored and grateful for the support of my colleagues on the Council,” said Councilmember Ashman in a statement released by the City of Gaithersburg. “I’m looking forward to serving all of Gaithersburg’s stakeholders in this new capacity.”
If that happens, Ashman would serve as Mayor until the next municipal election on November 3, 2015. In that election, officials said the Mayoral term will be for two years, fulfilling the remainder of the four year term which began in 2013.
“The Council and I have accomplished much together over the years,” said Gaithersburg Mayor Sidney Katz in a statement released by the city. “Pending my election to the County Council, I have no doubt that Mayor Ashman, the City Council and I will continue our efforts to work collaboratively to uphold Gaithersburg’s reputation as one of Montgomery County’s great communities.”
City officials said 12 people applied for an anticipated opening on the City Council. The applicants include: Joseph Allen, Richard L. Arkin, Jarrod Borkat, Bruce Goldensohn, Neil H. Harris, Yvette D. Monroe, Thomas S. Rowse, Laurie-Anne Sayles, Joshua Schuman, Juan Carlos Villao, William Gregory Wims, and Robert T. Wu.
The City Council plans to meet behind closed doors on October 13 to narrow the selection of the dozen candidates to no more than five.
After that, selected candidates are expected to be invited to deliver a three-minute statement at the Mayor and City Council work session on October 27 and participate in evening interviews with City Councilmembers, tentatively scheduled for October 29.
Selection of the new Councilmember is slated to take place at an executive session on November 3, with the swearing in taking place on November 10, to be immediately followed by a reception in the City Hall Gallery. The selected Council Member is expected to serve until the next municipal election on November 3, 2015.
One of the first people to publicly congratulate Ashman on his selection was Councilmember Ryan Spiegel.
Congrats to my friend & colleague @judashman on his selection by the Council to serve as the next mayor of @GburgMD. http://t.co/yPzgoKy2xB
