Jubilation Day Concert Brings Gospel to Gaithersburg
Gospel music, the American art form that gave rise to jazz, blues, R&B, and rock and roll, will be celebrated at the 8th Annual Jubilation Day Gospel Extravaganza on May 31 from 3:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Gaithersburg concert pavilion.
Performances of Christian music and worship by local and regional choirs, choruses, quartets, dancers, and soloists will be featured during the 8th annual event.
“Jubilation Day is a great way to share uplifting musical performances with the greater Gaithersburg community,” said Gaithersburg’s Cultural Arts Director Denise Kayser. “Quality of life is cited among the reasons the City has received national recognition, and gatherings like this one add to a wonderful sense of belonging.”
Performers at the event include Alysia Hall, Elder Boykins & the Ministers of Praise, Emphasis Band, Juan Rivas, Kenneth Anderson, Living Alabaster Dance Ministry, Mark Orrell of the Band London Lane, Music Makers Choir, New Beginning Church of God Brass Band, Restoration Band, Rockville COGOP VI Praise Team, Seneca Creek Community Church, Spiritual Jubilees of Washington, DC, and Tammilee P. Jules.
This year’s featured performer is “The Sons of God,” a soulful traditional gospel group that intersperses twists of contemporary flavor. Founded by Chauncey Exton, who comes from a family of gospel singers, the group has performed with Stella Award Winners, at venues such as Six Flags America, and at many churches and halls. The Sons of God have also appeared on “Bobby Jones Presents,” as well as the PG County TV show “Cosey’s Lounge.”
Kayser says they expect between 700 and 800 people to show up at the festival.
Admission to Jubilation Day is free. The celebration will also feature food and crafts for purchase and raffle drawings, for which winners must be present.
The outdoor venue features lawn seating with limited chairs. Please feel free to bring your own chair or blanket.
