JOY Supernovas Bring Home the Gold

The JOY Supernovas competed in the World Cheerleading Championships in Orlando this past weekend and won the gold medal.

The Montgomery County-based team is the first Special Olympics cheerleading team to represent the United States in the competition.

These 17 athletes have intellectual and developmental disabilities and range in age from 13 to 30.

Gov. Larry Hogan congratulated the team through Facebook, “Congratulations to the JOY Supernovas, who brought home gold from the World Cheerleading Championships – you make our state proud!”

The team told WJLA they celebrated their victory by spending the day at Disney World.
