José Andrés’s World Central Kitchen Heads to Blair High School
World Central Kitchen is heading to Blair High School on Friday, Feb. 8 to help government workers and contractors who were hurt by the federal government shutdown.
The announcement was made before President Donald Trump announced that the government would be re-opened, at least until Feb 15. After the president’s announcement, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue’s EEO Office tweeted that the event would continue as planned.
MCFRSEEO is partnering with Montgomery County Councilmember Tom Hucker to bring World Central Kitchen to Blair.
World Central Kitchen is Chef José Andrés’s nonprofit that has “relief chefs” who travel to different areas that have faced natural disasters, outbreaks of poverty and more. Two weeks ago, World Central Kitchen started helping furloughed workers in need by opening up a kitchen on Pennsylvania Avenue.
MCFRSEEO tweeted that they are continuing to bring World Central Kitchen to Silver Spring to show support for community members who were hit hard by the shutdown–especially federal contractors who will not receive back pay for their lost wages.
MCFRSEEO tweeted, “The dinner will celebrate the furloughed workers’ resilience and also give added advocacy and resources as people get back up and running.”
The event will start at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 8.
Though the federal government will open for three weeks, we still feel the need to help those impacted by the shutdown to help them get back on their feet and put their lives back in place. We look forward to partnering with @tomhucker and @WCKitchen. pic.twitter.com/N2wPEQZCLM

Also, a reminder to everyone that hourly contractors who work for the federal government are hardest hit since they will receive no backpay for wages lost. We encourage local partners to continue providing food and other resources. Your support will help them come back stronger. pic.twitter.com/cSo5fVclu0
