José Andrés to Appear on Michelle Obama’s Upcoming Kids Cooking Show

Celebrity chef, humanitarian and Bethesda resident José Andrés announced on Twitter that he’ll be appearing on Michelle Obama’s upcoming children’s cooking show on Netflix.

“People of America! My friend @MichelleObama is launching a show about the magic of exploring new foods…and I’m excited to be coming along! You’re going to love my new best friends, #WafflesAndMochi!,” Andrés tweeted.

Waffles + Mochi starts streaming on Netflix on March 16. In the 10-episode series, the former First Lady owns a grocery store and befriends two puppets who hop on a magic shopping cart, traveling around the world to become chefs. The two puppets, Waffles and Mochi, travel around the the world meeting chefs and celebrities as they cook up healthy recipes with everyday ingredients.

One of the chefs the puppets meet along the way will be Andrés, who founded the food relief nonprofit, World Central Kitchen. The series will feature other celebrity appearances from Jack Black, Rashida Jones, Common, Zach Galifianakis, Tan France, Gaten Matarazzo, Sia, Mandy Moore, Samin Nosrat, and Massimo Bottura.

The show appears to be a continuation of Obama’s “Let’s Move!” campaign launched when she was First Lady to help end childhood obesity by promoting healthy foods and physical activity.

In May 2018, The Obamas launched Higher Ground Productions and signed a multiyear deal with Netflix to produce educational film and television shows for the streaming company. Waffles + Mochi is the latest show produced by the Obamas to come to Netflix.

“I’m excited for families and children everywhere to join us on our adventures as we discover, cook, and eat delicious food from all over the world,” Mrs. Obama tweeted.
