JBG Selected to Receive Montgomery Serves Award

The JBG Companies is honored to have been selected as the 2013 business recipient of the Montgomery Serves Award, presented annually by the Montgomery County Volunteer Center in partnership with the Fund for Montgomery.

The Montgomery Serves Award recognizes “those who have given extraordinary community service or volunteerism.” The award is presented in four categories: youth, business, individual and group.

JBG was recognized for its 2013 Days of Giving effort in which about 400 JBG employees volunteered more than 1,600 hours with 10 different charities. In Montgomery County, that work included rebuilding a home for a single mother in need of affordable housing with Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County; clearing two tons of trash and debris from the Twinbrook portion of Rock Creek Park with the Rock Creek Conservancy; and helping A Wider Circle in Silver Spring get beds and furniture into the homes of dozens of low-income families.

“Montgomery Serves judges said many amazing nominations were received for businesses making a real difference in the community, but the breadth of non-profits served and the number of volunteer hours given by JBG employees in 2013 placed them in the top position and was a true picture of extraordinary volunteer service,” said Andrea Kempner-Wink, senior fellow with the Montgomery County Volunteer Center.

This year’s award recipients will be recognized, along with winners of the Neal Potter Path of Achievement Awards and the Roscoe R. Nix Distinguished Community Leadership Awards, during an evening ceremony and reception on April 28 at Imagination Stage in Bethesda.

“JBG is truly honored to be selected to receive the Montgomery Serves Award,” said Rod Lawrence, a JBG partner. “But we are most proud of our employees who have embraced volunteerism with such enthusiasm that a one-time effort has now become an annual initiative. It gets said over and over, but is true: We benefit from our volunteerism just as much as the charities do.”

Mark Bergel, the founder and executive director of A Wider Circle, had this to say about the JBG volunteer teams who spent nine days working at the nonprofit. “To borrow a phrase, JBG volunteers epitomize the change we need in this world. Their efforts at A Wider Circle were an inspiration to every staff member. The employees who came … all took a sincere interest not only in our work but in the lives of those whom they helped us to serve. The amount of work they did each day was impressive.”
