An iconic Silver Spring destination will soon close it’s doors. Jackie’s Restaurant on Georgia Avenue will serve it’s last “farm to table” meal on Saturday, March 26.

The restaurant opened in 2004 and was founded by co-owners Jackie Greenbaum and Patrick Higgins. Jackie’s Restaurant was part of a revitalization of downtown Silver Spring and the first of it’s kind in the area according to Greenbaum, who the restaurant is named for. After nearly 12 years in Silver Spring, Greenbaum says it’s time to move on to start something fresh and new.

“I think it’s the natural life cycle of a restaurant. For the high end type of restaurants, you don’t want to do them forever,” Greenbaum said. “Business is slower [although] not terrible, but it’s slowed over the years. I just think that there comes a time which is natural and where you don’t want to do it anymore and retire the concept, especially when it’s still strong.”

Jackie’s Restaurant may be serving it’s last meal on Saturday, but the party will go on. Greenbaum plans to open a new Italian restaurant called Little Coco’s this June. The majority of staff will transfer to the new restaurant which will be located in the Petworth neighborhood in Washington D.C. She added that although Jackie’s will close it’s doors, she hopes loyal customers will visit some “old friends” when Little Coco’s opens this summer.

“I’ve loved it. Jackie’s has been a joy for me. It’s a very unique and personal restaurant. I love the food we’ve served and I think the the quality of service is what made Jackie’s so special….I’m going to be very sad to say good-bye,” Greenbaum said.
