Jack and Jill Spelling Bee and Oratorical Competition Set For Feb. 21
The Jack and Jill of America, Inc. Montgomery County Maryland Chapter is hosting the 6th annual Community Spelling Bee and Benjamin E. Mays Oratorical Competition on February 21 from 1 – 4 p.m. at Georgetown Preparatory School in North Bethesda.
The spelling bee is open to Montgomery County residents in first through fifth grades. The oratorical competition is open to Montgomery County residents in grades 6-8 (for Division 1) and students in 9-12 (for Division II). The topic for this year’s contest: “How to build a better relationship between law enforcement and African American youth.”
There will be local community leaders, educators and other professionals on hand to judge the oratorical competition.
Founded six years ago, the Spelling Bee is the brainchild of Jack and Jill member Chandra Walker Holloway. She was inspired by her children’s interest in their school’s spelling bee and brought the idea to the chapter for a county-wide event that would provide the opportunity for any child in Montgomery County to participate in a spelling bee. The oratorical contest was developed by associate member Brenda Baldwin-White, based on the movie, The Great Debaters.
“We are very proud of the Jack and Jill, Montgomery County Chapter Spelling Bee and Oratorical Competition. Each year, as the program has grown, we’ve been able to draw a diverse population of students from across the county,” said Doreen Hope, who is the current chapter president. “It’s amazing to watch them showcase their vocabulary development and public speaking skills.”
