Inmate Charged with Attempted First-Degree Murder of Correctional Officer

A 26-year-old jailed at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility in Boyds has been charged with the attempted first-degree murder of a correctional officer, according to a Montgomery County police statement released Monday.
About 5 a.m. Sunday, Edgar Alfonso Borrera, 26, punched a correctional officer in the face and upper body and attacked him with a weapon fashioned from hard plastic and a milk carton, police said.
The attack occurred on an upper tier of the jail in front of the cells.
After the assault, another inmate rendered aid to the victim and grabbed Borrera trying to contain him. Other correctional officers responded to assist the victim, police said.
The victim was taken to a hospital with multiple injuries to include fractured bones in his face and lacerations to his forehead, police said.
Detectives found the weapon Borrera used during the assault and seized it as evidence, police said.
Borrera has been charged with attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault, and second-degree assault of a correctional officer, police said.
He had been jailed on unrelated criminal charges dating from January and April, according to online court records.
