Initial Unemployment Claims Down In County, State

Initial claims for unemployment by Montgomery County residents dropped by more than 500 during the week that ended Oct. 17. During that week, 2,703 Montgomery County residents filed initial unemployment claims. During the previous week, 3,228 initial claims were filed, according to the Maryland Department of Labor.

Statewide, the number of initial claims filed dropped by almost 5,000. During the week that ended Oct. 17, 23,203 Marylanders filed initial unemployment claims. During the week that ended Oct. 10, 28,388, Maryland residents had filed.

Between March of this year when the state issued its shutdown orders due to COVID-19 and Sept. 5, a total of 214,080 Montgomery County residents have filed initial unemployment claims, according to the Maryland DOL.
