Initial Unemployment Claims by County Residents Continue to Rise

Initial claims for unemployment filed by Montgomery County residents continued to climb during the week ending Jan. 16.

Last week, 4,503 residents filed initial claims, according to the Maryland Department of Labor (DOL). That is more than 1,500 new claims as compared with the prior week’s filing. During the week that ended Jan. 9, 3,376 county residents filed initial claims.

Initial claims filed throughout the state rose by 10,000. During the week that ended Jan. 16, 41,596 initial unemployment claims were filed. Marylanders filed 31,513 initial claims during the week that ended Jan. 9. Marylanders filed 11,013 initial claims during the week that ended Jan. 2, compared to 18,100 who filed during the week that ended Dec. 26.
