In Derwood Residents Voice Their Concerns to Councilmember Katz (PHOTOS & VIDEO)
Montgomery County Councilmember Sidney Katz hosted a town hall meeting on June 3 at Redland Middle School to meet with Washington Grove, Derwood and Redland residents.
Some of the hot topics were the development of the Shady Grove Sector Plan, transportation, public safety and education.
“Certainly, the budget is part of the discussion this evening. … Tonight is not about me is about them,” Katz said.
MaryAnn Shirven, a Derwood resident, believes Katz cares about the community and she previously worked with former Councilmember Phil Andrews on issues that impacted the Derwood community.
“I think the problem is one person like Phil or like Sidney can’t go up against the state and developers and all the people that want to make money off of Montgomery County,” she said.
Shirven added she opposed the ICC. Now, two years after the highway was built, she is concerned about the stream restoration near the road.
“I’m concerned when they did the ICC stream restoration they planted a ton of trees and they [trees] washed away the first time it rained. They changed the deep creek to hold the water in the rain storm into a flat area. So as it rained, it just flooded,” she said.
Others expressed concerns about possible alterations to the Shady Grove Sector Master Plan.
“We are concerned about the plan and being reopened and that some very key elements would be open for discussion. Those were developed with very intense and larger amount of involvement from all sort of parties. And the development has yet to occur. For us, to be altered at this time could be a real problem,” said John Compton, a Washington Grove resident.
