I-495 and I-270 Managed Lanes Study on Montgomery County Council’s Agenda

Alleviating traffic-congestion, a legal defense fund for residents facing deportation proceedings, and affordable housing are just some issues that the Montgomery County Council will take up when they reconvene after a nearly two-month hiatus next week.

After Gov. Larry Hogan’s proposal to add four express toll lanes to the Beltway and I-270, the Maryland Department of Transportation began a study to evaluate options for widening the highways.

MDOT staffers are expected to join the council during its Sept. 11 session for a briefing on the I-495 and I-270 Managed Lanes Study.

Before the traffic briefing, the Council is expected to take action on a resolution that would increase the amount of funding provided to organizations providing legal services to County residents in deportation proceedings.

If the resolution passes, more than $300,000 would be appropriated to the Department of Health and Human Services that would be used to provide screening services or direct legal representation to low-income County residents in non-citizen deportation or removal proceedings.

The Montgomery County Council session is scheduled for Sept. 11 and begins at 9:30 a.m.

Hope the Council makes it clear that they oppose widening both highways and favor transit solutions.
