The stabbing happened on June 19 on Piney Branch Road in an apartment above the El Sitio Restaurant in Silver Spring, according to a Montgomery County Police release.

Police said Ulises A. Blanco-Melgar, 31, of the 7300 block of 18th Avenue, stabbed Tomas Herrera Batres, 49, of the 8200 block of Piney Branch Road, multiple times.  A witness followed Blanco-Melgar from the scene and alerted officers who then arrested him, police said.

Batres died of his injuries on Monday, according to the release.

Blanco-Melgar had initially been charged with one count of attempted first-degree murder, one count of first-degree assault, and one count of second-degree assault. He is now charged with one count of first-degree murder and is being held without bond in the Montgomery County Detention Center.

A search of online court records did not yet have an attorney listed for Blanco-Melgar.
