Hundreds of Students Attend Choose Respect Conference on Healthy Teen Dating (PHOTOS)

Over 500 students, parents and teachers came out to Richard Montgomery High School on Sunday for an event aimed at countering teen dating violence. Students from sixth grade through high school were encouraged to attend the event to learn about healthy dating techniques and ways of countering dating abuse.

Attendees were encouraged to take pictures and use social media along with the hashtag #respectyourselfie2016.

According to a news release from Choose Respect, one in three teens in the U.S. is a victim of physical, sexual, emotional or verbal abuse from a dating partner and one in ten high school students has been purposefully hit, slapped or physically hurt by a boyfriend or girlfriend.

MCPS students received recognition and prizes for producing public service announcements against dating abuse. First prize was awarded to a team from Roberto Clemente Middle School, second place went to a group of students from Sherwood High School and third place was awarded to a team from Forrest Oak Middle School.

The event was co-sponsored by Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS), the Domestic Violence Coordinating Council and more. MCPS TV has a video recap of the event online. For more information on the healthy teen dating, visit the Choose Respect website.
