Hundreds Attend Women’s Legislative Briefing (VIDEO)

The Montgomery County Commission for Women hosted the 35th Women’s Legislative Briefing on Jan. 25 at The Universities at Shady Grove in Rockville.

Hundreds of women attended the all day event where a variety of issues were discussed. Among the topics equal pay, domestic violence, paid sick leave, human trafficking, encouraging woman to run for positions that can influence legislation, healthcare for aging women and much more.

“This conversation is important because it’s about two things: it’s about educating our community about what issues are critical importance to our community, but it’s about engagement; community engagement and empowerment. Just giving people the information that they need so they know what the issues are,” said Debra Harris, president of Montgomery County Commission for Women.

The event’s keynote speaker was Ann F. Lewis, former senior White House staffer, who talked aging parents, equal pay, gender discrimination and the importance of Social Security for everyone, especially women.

The annual briefing was co-sponsored by more than 50 community organizations with support from Kaiser Permanente and AARP.

This year’s event also included panel discussions addressing senior women and long term care, women in leadership, immigrant women, economic empowerment for women, health and safety for women and girls, and a teen track session to help young girls to learn basic advocacy skills.

The conference opened with remarks by Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett; Frederick County Executive Jan Gardner; Senator Ben Cardin; Congressmen John Sarbanes and Chris Van Hollen; and Congresswoman Donna Edwards.
