Huge Flag Display Planned on Memorial Day Weekend
For three days at the end of May, 750 large American flags are expected to fly on the lawn at Bohrer Park.
The flags will be displayed from May 22 to 25 at Bohrer Park at Summit Hall Farm on South Frederick Avenue.
They will be put in place by the Rotary Clubs of Montgomery Village and Gaithersburg. Each flag will be sponsored by a firm or individual to honor his or her “hero.”
The program pays tribute to past and present heroes, honoring members of the military, police, firefighters, teachers, coaches, mentors, and other community leaders. The City of Gaithersburg’s Wells/Robertson House and CHARACTER COUNTS! program are among the many local charitable organizations that benefit.
If a sponsor does not name honorees, some will be selected by a local veterans organization, according to Kenneth D. Weiss, of the Gaithersburg Rotary Club.
The display was first set up in 2013 by the Rotary Club of Easton and last year by the clubs in Easton and in Montgomery Village. This year, the Montgomery Village and Gaithersburg clubs are working together to provide a huge patriotic display, Weiss said.
Gaithersburg city officials, Junior ROTC members, Boy Scouts, and others will participate in an opening ceremony on May 23 at 11 a.m., according to a press release from the city. Scouts will camp on the grounds to guard the flags all weekend, Weiss said.
Firms and individuals that want to sponsor flags can contact a member of either Rotary club, call 301.670.7370 x1103 or log on to www.flagsforourheroes.org. Each sponsor will receive a map that shows where his or her flag is located. After Memorial Day, each sponsor will receive a medallion that gives his or her name and that of the person who was honored.
Hope the display will be a big success! http://starspangledflags.com
