Hucker to Introduce Bill Banning Indoor Tanning for Those Under 18

Solarium tanning bedMontgomery County Councilmember Tom Hucker is planning to introduce a bill that would prohibit those 18-and-under from using indoor tanning facilities. Currently, minors are allowed to use tanning facilities if accompanied by an adult in Montgomery County.

Hucker is the lead sponsor of Bill 5-16. He plans to introduce the tanning bill ban at the Council’s March 1st meeting.

The bill would prohibit minors from using indoor tanning devices; would require tanning facilities and customers to adhere to certain duties; and would require tanning facilities to provide certain warning statements and post certain signs.

According to a Council news release, Hucker is introducing the bill because studies indicate excessive exposure to rays could lead to later health problems.

A public hearing is tentatively scheduled on the bill at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 22.
