Hucker on DACA: ‘People Need to Know County Government Has Their Back’ (VIDEO)

In response to a statement issued by the White House to end the program established by the Obama administration which protects undocumented children from deportation and eligible for work permits, local officials are speaking out.

The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, also known as DACA, allowed people who came to the United States as children to request deferred action for a period of two years if they met certain guidelines.

Trump tweeted on Tuesday that he’s looking forward to working with members of Congress to address immigration in a way “that puts hardworking citizens of our country first.”

Following his announcement, the Montgomery County Council, County Executive Ike Leggett and Montgomery College President Dr. DeRionne Pollard publicly criticized the president’s decision to end the program.

And while the fate for the more than 800,000 young people, often referred to as “Dreamers,” is unknown, Montgomery County Councilmember Tom Hucker said it’s important for those impacted to know that “county government has their backs.”
