House Fire Sends Four Firefighters to the Hospital

About 80 firefighters were dispatched to  a single family house fire on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 11118 Nicholas Drive and four of them were injured while fighting the blaze.

Officials said the firefighters were treated at local hospitals for their injuries, which are not considered life threatening.

The fire call was originally dispatched  at 4:41 a.m. and first units arriving on scene reported fire coming from a first floor window on the side of the structure. Fire officials said an interior attack began as firefighters deployed four hose lines. The fire involved a portion of the first floor and extended into the attic before it was brought under control by firefighters, according to a county fire rescue news release.

During the investigation, officials said it was determined that the house was a rental and the occupants had recently abandoned the property. The fire’s origin and cause examination indicates that the fire started under the kitchen the sink. Several energized electrical items were discovered within the area of origin, according to information released by the Montgomery County Fire Rescue Service.

Fire officials noted that because the damage was so extensive they were unable to determine the exact cause of the fire. The fire has been classified as “undetermined.”  However, officials said, the cause of the blaze will continue to be investigated and officials will provide updates if warranted.

Damage is estimated to be approximately $200,000, fire officials said.
