Honoring Congressional Gold Medal Winners

The Montgomery County Council honored two World War II veterans on Oct. 23 with a proclamation.

John Henry Chaney recounts some of his experiences in World War II on Oct. 23 as the Montgomery County Council honored Chaney and his lifelong friend from northern Montgomery County, Charles Frazier, right.

Council member Craig Rice, left, presented proclamations to the veterans, who were members of the first black unit in the U.S. Marines.

Chaney and Frazier, who were in the Battle of Iwo Jima, were present in June when 366 surviving members of the original 19,000 members of the segregated unit were awarded Congressional Gold Medals—the nation’s highest honor for civilians.
