Homeless Resource Day Nov. 7 in Gaithersburg
The third annual Homeless Resource Fair is scheduled for Nov. 7 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Bohrer Park Activity Center, 506 South Frederick Avenue. County Executive Isiah Leggett and County Councilmember George Leventhal will attend to observe first-hand the variety of programs and services offered for residents experiencing homelessness. More than 60 organizations will offer a range of resources, including free medical screenings, eye exams, legal services, financial counseling, tax assistance, substance abuse and mental health counseling and social services. Last year’s Resource Day attracted more than 600 attendees and more than 300 volunteers.
In addition, free haircuts and manicures will be offered and attendees can learn about shelter resources and apply for Motor Vehicle Administration identification cards. Transportation will be provided from the Bethesda, Rockville, Shady Grove and Silver Spring metro stations. Bi-lingual guides and sign language interpreters will be available to assist attendees.
During the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments one day count of the homeless population in January 2013, there were 1007 homeless individuals counted in Montgomery County. The County is currently participating in Registry Work, with volunteers surveying homeless individuals from Nov. 4 to Nov. 6. Survey data will then be utilized to quickly and efficiently move the most vulnerable into permanent housing with supported services.
