Homeless Residents Receive Free Health Screenings (PHOTOS)
There were more than 950 households experiencing homelessness in 2015, according to Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) staff.
In an effort to help those in need, DHHS hosted their Sixth Annual Nadin Khan Homeless Resource Day in Gaithersburg for residents experiencing homelessness.
“It’s very difficult when you’re living on the streets to make and keep appointments so this is a great opportunity for individuals to have a one-stop shop,” said Amanda Harris, chief of special needs housing for Montgomery County DHHS. “They can get so much accomplished in one day.”
Free flu shots, blood pressure screenings and getting residents signed up for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) were just some services offered.
“Overall, the goal is to get people connected into our system,” said Harris. “We have to first know who is experiencing homelessness so we can determine the appropriate housing intervention for them and get them linked up.”
Staff from the Montgomery County Department Health and Human Services said their goal is to end chronic homelessness in the county by Dec. 31, 2017.
