Holidaze, A Pop up Holiday Market, is Open for Business (VIDEO)

Walls filled with arts, t-shirts, stuffed animals, jewelry, and more, was just a few of the handmade gifts available for purchase on the opening night of Holidaze- a holiday pop-up store at the upstairs gallery space inside Pyramid Atlantic Art Center in Silver Spring.

Megan Moriarty, manager for Fenton Street Market- a weekly marketplace at the Veterans Plaza in downtown Silver Spring- is behind the project to support local artists and vendors.

“We wanted to stay really local. So a lot of Silver Spring artists were chosen and just vendors that we worked for a long time,” Moriarty said.

On Dec. 4, organizers officially opened the store, which Moriarty said “it’s the Fenton Street Market experience but inside.”

“Mostly is just to support local artists and come in and spend twenty to thirty dollars and make sure it stays in the neighborhood,” Moriarty said.

Approximately 30 vendors are participating in the Holidaze marketplace.

Sarah Potter, owner of Hooked and Loopy, is the artist behind hand-knitted and hand-crocheted toys, gifts, and stuffed animals. She wished the store happened “year round.”

“My grandmother taught me how to crochet when I was really small … [and] it’s my way of teaching my daughter about the fact that toys can be special,” Potter said.

Evan Glass, Silver Spring resident and interim executive director of Gandhi Brigade- an youth media organization- said Holidaze is the “embodiment” of shopping local.

“When people shop locally, their impact is felt so much more than shopping in a big box national retail,” Glass said.

The Holidaze marketplace is scheduled to open on select dates, starting Dec. 4 through Dec. 23. To find out more, visit the Fenton Street Market website.
