Hail Redskins!
Talk about a fun assignment.
The Washington Redskins visited the Midcounty Recreation Center in Silver Spring as part of the team’s 80th anniversary thank you tour on July 24.
I love football and I grew up cheering for the Washington Redskins (and the Miami Dolphins) so this was an assignment I will remember even if the new quarterback was not in attendance.
Redskins greats Charles Mann and Dexter Manley joined DeJon Gomes and Nick Sundberg on this local stop along with Redskins Nation host Larry Michael, the cheerleaders and the Hogettes. It was a homecoming for Larry Michael who hails from Silver Spring. No surprise, Michael said everyone keeps asking him about RG3.
Skins player D.J. Gomes said it was an honor for him to visit with the kids in Silver Spring and he said he was looking forward to training camp. Sundberg spent almost the entire two hours playing field-day type games with the kids. The long snapper does a lot of charity work for the team and Michael said for either current player to be at this week’s event was remarkable since their workload steps way up during training camp.
We also learned that Mann and Manley are big fans of the Olympics with Mann favoring track events and Manley favoring the swimming events. When I asked Manley about the Phelps/Locke rivalry, he diplomatically said he was cheering for everyone wearing the “red, white and blue.” What about the upcoming football season? Mann said he would be ecstatic if the team went 9-7 or 10-6. Manley said he was optimistic, too. And, Michael? Well, if you watch his show you know he predicts a win every game.
Also on this assignment: MyMCMedia intern David Cabrera who is our in-house Redskins expert. Cabrera said he felt like he was in heaven to be in the field on this assignment. His comment made my day because he leaves our studios this week to go back to college so it’s nice to know he enjoyed one of his last summer assignments so much. Since he joined our staff this summer, he has been editing a number of our MyMCMedia extras that we post on our website and he’s been one of our favorite intern bloggers. In fact, we hope he will keep blogging, especially during the football season.
