Green Pavement Markings Installed in Silver Spring as MoCo Leads Way in Bicycle Safety on State Highways

Montgomery County is the first in the state to have protected bicycle infrastructure on State highways, according to a recent news release from the office of Council Vice President Hans Riemer.

Green pavement markings were installed in downtown Silver Spring along certain intersections. The green paint markings are aimed at improving visibility, and thus safety, for cyclists.
In the release, Riemer praised the project:

“These safety markings symbolize big steps forward for bike infrastructure in Montgomery County. Green pavement markings substantially increase the visibility of bicyclists and make motorists and bicyclists more predictable to one another. While the County has been installing green pavement markings on County roads for several years, there is great value in installing these in intersections with state highways, where the conflicts are particularly acute. I am proud that Montgomery County continues to lead the state in safe bicycling infrastructure, and I look forward to seeing more examples of these throughout the County.”

In a 2016 letter, Riemer joined fellow Montgomery County council members Tom Hucker and Roger Berliner in asking state highway administrator Gary Johnson to apply green paint in state highways for bike lanes. District 20 Senator Jamie Raskin, as well as District 20 delegates David Moon, Sheila Hixson, and Will Smith, also signed the letter.

Various studies have shown the positive effects of colored bike lanes on safety.
