Governor Hogan Asks for Residents to Stay off the Roads (VIDEO)

Governor Hogan urges residents to remain patient and stay indoors while crews work to clear roads. Earlier today, Governor Hogan had this to say at the Maryland Emergency Operations Center:

According to a press release, Hogan continues to direct all state agencies in a coordinated response to the winter blizzard that pummelled the state this weekend.

The Maryland Emergency Management Agency continues to coordinate State resources that remain positioned around Maryland as they respond to requests for resource from Montgomery County and other local jurisdicitons. The agency will assist with damage assessments, recovery efforts and requests for federal assistance.

Maryland State Police have responded to more than 1,300 calls for service, including 187 accidents. The police have assisted more than 600 motorists. Extra troopers remain on-duty today and continue to encourage people to stay off the road. Troopers have been assigned to emergency operation centers in each county to facilitiate prompt assistance from the state. Truck weighing scale house locations were made available to commercial trucks for parking during the storm.

The State Highway Administration (SHA) worked overnight to clear I-70 and I-270 interstates which re-opened shortly after 7 a.m. this morning. The SHA and the Maryland Transportation Authority are responding with more than 3,000 pieces of equipment and 365,000 tons of salt to clear the roads.

The Maryland National Guard are available to assist local law enforcement with transportation and evacuation; distribuiton of supplies, road clearning and snow removal; search and rescue, security/law enforcement; and sheltering assistance.

Governor Hogan said, “Even though the storm has now moved past us, getting back to business as usual will take a considerable amount of time.”
