I just shot video of the trees being cut down this morning in the courtyard of Calvert Landing building at Riderwood retirement community in Silver Spring, Maryland, to make room for a new swimming pool that no one will use. There are 72 apartments whose nice courtyard view will soon be reduced to looking at a new building’s walls. These are all very elderly people, average age 85-95, who paid $250,000 and up as a “deposit” for the apartments here, and then $2500/month in rent. Yet now the view they paid extra for is gone, and the fair market value of their apartment will plummet, taking away millions of dollars in equity. These retirees are heartbroken at this development and this is worth a story now.
