Goshen Elementary School Student is City’s Top Reader

James Lu, a student at Goshen Elementary School knows a thing our two about books. In fact, he read 7,222 pages and is the top individual reader in the City of Gaithersburg 6th Annual Mayor’s Book Club Reading Contest.

James, who is in Carol Prince’s class at Goshen Elementary School will be invited to ride on the trolley with the Mayor and City Council during the 77th Annual Gaithersburg Labor Day Parade in Olde Towne on September 7, according to a news release from the city.

Over a four-week period in March and April, 249 third grade students in seven area elementary schools read nearly 250,000 pages as they competed for top prize in the 6^th Annual Mayor’s Book Club Reading Contest, held in conjunction with the Gaithersburg Book Festival.

Ashley Mohoric’s class from Gaithersburg Elementary School won top honors, with students reading a combined 23,456 pages during the four-week period.

At a special ceremony during the May 16 Gaithersburg Book Festival, Mayor Jud Ashman will recognize the winning class and winning student.  The presentation is scheduled to take place in the Children’s Village at 1:40 p.m. and will also feature a choral introduction by Gaithersburg Elementary School students.

Participating students from the seven schools, which include Gaithersburg, Goshen, Laytonsville, Rosemont, St. Martin of Tours, Strawberry Knoll, and Washington Grove Elementary Schools, are now members of the Mayor’s Book Club.
