Glass takes over helm of the organization after executive director Richard Jaeggi’s died of a brain tumor in May.

Gandhi Brigade is a Silver Spring-based nonprofit that educates youth to use multimedia platforms toward the creation of social justice media. Founded in 2005, the mission is to empower young people to realize their inner and collective power to become champions of the common good.

Glass has worked with the group since 2008 helping with youth programming. Now, he plans to help focus the group after Jaeggi’s passing.

“It was a shock to all of us in the community and his passing created a void in the organization. I am humbled to step in to his shoes to help put the organization on the right track,” Glass said.

The group uses loaned office space in Silver Spring and has worked out of a local church. Glass told MyMCMedia he hopes to find a more permanent space for the group. He says about 30 to 40 high school youth are enrolled in the organization’s programming.

“I am laying the groundwork for the programs were are going to offer in the fall when our youth go back to school and get engaged in back to school program,” he said.

The group  recently got a $150,000 grant from Montgomery County to work with other nonprofits to do cyber-civility curriculum helping to educate youth on the power and dangers of social media.

Glass said he expects to serve as the group’s interim director until January.

“Evan is the right person to lead Gandhi Brigade as we begin an exciting new year of programming, “ said Vicki Warren, chairperson of the board. “He has deep roots in the greater Silver Spring community we serve and his skills as a nonprofit leader and media professional will be tremendous assets to the organization.”

Evan will lead the organization while a Search Committee comprised of community leaders and Board members works to identify a long-term successor. After an unsuccessful bid for county council, Glass said he expects to also spend more time on his job as a communications consultant. His term as chairman of the Silver Spring Advisory Board expired this summer.
