Germantown Man Arrested for Thefts from Schools

A tipster alerted Montgomery County police of a Germantown man believed to be behind a string of thefts at county schools, police said in a statement released Tuesday.
Nakym Sheffield, 39, of Circle Gate Drive faces numerous credit card fraud charges, according to online court records. He was released after posting $3,000 bail, the records say.
Police said they received reports from 11 women who worked at county schools or child care centers whose purses or wallets were stolen from classrooms and offices.
The victims’ credit cards were used to purchase items at stores, police said.
Police said Sheffield found unattended classrooms and offices, found the employees’ purses and bags, stole the wallet or took cash and credit cards.
He used the credit cards to buy merchandise at county stores, police said.
At three locations, school personnel asked him why he was in the school, and Sheffield replied he was with the cleaning staff or working with a camp, then he would leave, police said.
Police released photographs to the public and asked for help identifying the person responsible for the thefts July 7. From those photos, a tipster called police, and Bethesda District investigators arrested him on July 15, police said.
This investigation is ongoing, police said.
