Gayles Named Chief Health Officer of San Francisco-Based Company

Montgomery County Health Officer Dr. Travis Gayles.

Montgomery County Health Officer Dr. Travis Gayles has been named to a new position for the San Francisco, California-based telehealth company Hazel Health.

Last week, Gayles resigned from county health officer effective Sept. 12.

Hazel Health is a telehealth organization that partners with schools to provide healthcare to students.

“At no time in any of our lives has access to meaningful health services been more important for children,” Gayles said in a statement from the company Wednesday afternoon announcing his new position. “Hazel Health has established itself as the leader in providing telehealth services to children across the country.”

“This platform has enormous potential to change the way pediatric physical and mental health care is delivered and close the significant gaps that remain in access to care for children. I am excited to join the team to continue the tremendous growth and inspire even more innovation,” he said.

The statement reads, “As the country continues to battle a public health crisis with COVID-19 and an alarming rise in pediatric mental health cases, expert leadership across the organization is paramount to continue meeting growth demands.” Two additional chief officer positions were also announced.

“It is an opportunity that will allow me to continue to be committed to what I have tried to move through my career focused on, which is improving access to care and closing gaps in health outcomes for all members of our community, particularly those who are most vulnerable,” Gayles said during a media briefing Wednesday before the news was released.

He has been county health officer since Sept. 2017 leading public health decision-making for the county throughout the pandemic. Health and Human Services Director Dr. Raymond Crowel will work with the state health department to fill his position as it is a dual appointment between the county and state.
