Gandhi Brigade- a nonprofit that promotes youth development through media productions- hosted its eighth annual Youth Media Festival at the Silver Spring Civic Building from noon to 5 p.m. followed by performances at the Veteran’s Plaza from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

“We had a mix of locally produced films to showcase the work of the youth in our community. And we also had some films shared with us by Sundance Film Festival and the DC Independent Film Festival,” said Evan Glass, Gandhi Brigade’s executive director.

Glass said the organization wanted to partner with established film festivals to inspire local youth by some well-produced films.

According to a news release, the media festival included video, photography and live performances from students between ages 11 to 23. Besides screening work from local residents, the festival showcased movies from New York, Chicago, Philadephia, Boston, Baltimore, and Pakistan youth.

The festival also hosted a panel conversation titled “Teen Voices: Race, Sexuality, and Religion” featuring student filmmakers from “I, Too, Am BCC.”

“It was a really thoughtful conversation. Adults don’t necessarily know what’s on the mind of our youth. This is a way for the youth to hear from each other,” Glass said.

Glass added that the next project for Gandhi Brigade’s youth is a production about the juvenile system in our community. A topic that according to Glass was chosen by participants after events in Baltimore and other parts of the country.
