Gaithersburg Veterans Day Ceremony (Photos)
Congressman-elect John Delaney attended Gaithersburg’s Veterans Day Observance at the Gaithersburg City Hall Concert Pavilion on Nov. 11.
He was joined on stage by Gaithersburg Mayor Sidney Katz, City Council members Jud Ashman, Cathy Drzyzgula, Henry Marraffa, Ryan Spiegel and other officials, including Montgomery County Council member Phil Andrews.
There were dozens of residents and veterans in the crowd along with Gaithersburg Police Chief Mark Sroka. Acting City Manager Tony Tomasello said attendance was greater than usual for the annual event.
Mayor Katz noted that this was the first time a Congressman-elect had attended the ceremony.
The keynote speaker was Brigadier General (Ret.) Donald Whalen of the US Army Corps and the observance’s theme was entitled, “Honoring All Military Personnel Who Have Served Our Country.”
Junior Mayor Maya Walker led the Pledge of Allegiance. The National Anthem was performed by Paige Herndon of Gaithersburg High. The Gaithersburg High School NJROTC presented the colors and a drill team performance. Throughout the ceremony, the Gaithersburg High School Jazz Band performed music selections.
Also participating at the Nov. 11 event with the laying of the wreaths: Goshen Mills Chapter, National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution; Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Ladies Auxiliary of Foreign Wars, John M. Carter VFW Post 9862; Barber Briggs American Legion Post 104; Vietnam Veterans Memoral, Post 295 American Legion; Disabled American Veterans, Rockville Memorial Chapter 12. Taps was performed by Logan Evans of Gaithersburg High School.
