Gaithersburg Troop 1760 to Honor Four Eagle Scouts

Boy Scout Troop 1760 in Gaithersburg, Maryland, will honor the advancement of four Scouts to the rank of Eagle Scout at a ceremony May 2 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Gaithersburg, 200 W Diamond Avenue.

These four young men; Garrett Scott Adams, Hunter David Bunai, Leonard Liu, and Stephen Newman Palmer, have achieved the Eagle Scout rank for their Boy Scout honors, meritorious badges, and planning, developing, and providing leadership in a service project that benefited their community.

Only four percent of Scouts attain Eagle Scout, the highest rank of the Boy Scouts of America. Boy Scout Troop 1760 is quite proud of these young men and their significant accomplishments.

Garrett Scott Adams, a senior at Quince Orchard High School in Gaithersburg, was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout on January 23, having earned 29 merit badges and completing his service project. Garrett’s project was to design, fabricate, and finish six A Frame informational and directional signs that were attractive and easily portable by the staff at the Button Farm Living History Center located in Germantown. Garrett’s project provided accessible marketing tools which improved communications regarding events at Button Farm; a working farm and a living replica of Montgomery County’s community during the 1800’s. Visitors to this historical property are taken back to an era where farms thrived. Children and adults alike enjoy harvesting fruits and vegetables and seeing livestock in their natural habitat.

Hunter Bunai, a senior at Quince Orchard High School in Gaithersburg, was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout on October 24, 2014, having earned 23 merit badges and completing his service project. Hunter’s project was to restore a 193’ boardwalk at Seneca Creek State Park in Gaithersburg. The boardwalk required numerous repairs as it was built in a marshy area that was subject to flooding. Many of the boards had either rotted or collapsed. The foundation was damaged and needed to be replaced in areas that were unstable and dangerous to walk on. Hunter provided the service and materials needed to restore and rebuild the boardwalk, making it a safe, stable, and accessible walkway, which runs along Long Draft Trail and is a local path used by visitors.

Leonard Liu, a junior at Winston Churchill High School in Potomac, was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout on April 24, having earned 26 merit badges and completing his service project. Leonard’s project took place at Button Farm Living History Center located in Germantown. The project involved Leonard first constructing three outdoor signs, posting them around the center, and then installing mulch beds with decorative grass around each sign. The staff at Button Farm will be able to post information on the signs such as maps and upcoming news, which will provide information to the visitors of the living historical center.

Stephen Palmer, a senior at Quince Orchard High School in Gaithersburg, was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout on September 26, 2014, having earned 26 merit badges and completing his service project. Stephen’s project took place in Schwartz Peony Gardens in Seneca Creek State Park in Gaithersburg, where he, fellow Scouts and Scout parent’s, constructed an 80’ path from the roadway into the peony garden, which includes a foot bridge over the roadside culvert providing handicap accessibility. The peonies in this garden are transplants from the peony garden begun by Mr. Edward Schwartz in Olde Towne Gaithersburg in 1913.

A Court of Honor ceremony will be held Saturday, May 2  from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the First Baptist Church of Gaithersburg, 200 W Diamond Avenue, Gaithersburg, Maryland, to award these four young men with their Eagle Badge.
