Gaithersburg Postpones July 4 Fireworks to Labor Day

The City of Gaithersburg won’t have fireworks or its traditional summer festival this Fourth of July. Instead, due to “uncertainty about gatherings” the city will delay its fireworks display until Labor Day weekend.

Gaithersburg will still host its “Red, White & Blue Weekend” to celebrate Independence Day with both in-person and virtual events spanning the entire holiday weekend. Activities include a virtual photo parade, community chalk painting and a display of a new mural at the city’s skate park.

The postponed fireworks will be held Sunday, Sept. 5, and will replace the city’s traditional Labor Day parade. According to the city, this will be the only year it substitutes Independence Day’s fireworks for the usual end of summer festivities.

The festivities were postponed due to uncertainty about gatherings during the “extensive advance planning stages“. Fireworks were canceled last summer because of the pandemic and its restrictions on social gatherings.

However, a year later, Montgomery County has lifted all requirements on social distancing and is in its final phase of reopening. Additionally, Maryland will lift its state of emergency on July 1, three days before Independence Day. All emergency mandates and restrictions will be lifted before the holiday weekend begins.
