Gaithersburg Police Report 3.8 Percent Uptick in Crime
Gaithersburg city police reported a 3.8 percent increase in crime for the first three months of the year compared with the first three months of 2016, according to the city’s crime summary.
“Part I” crime increased by 7.5 percent, from 371 to 399. Part I offenses are homicide, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, motor vehicle theft, larceny-theft and arson.
“Part II” crime increased by 1 percent, from 489 to 494. Part II offenses, for which only arrest data are collected, are simple assault (no weapons are used); forgery and counterfeiting; fraud; embezzlement; buying, receiving or possessing stolen property; vandalism; carrying or possessing weapons; prostitution and commercialized vice; sex offenses; drug abuse violations; gambling; offenses against the family and children; driving under the influence; liquor laws; drunkenness; disorderly conduct; vagrancy; all other offenses; suspicion where an individual is released without formal charges being placed; curfew and loitering laws; and runaways.
Overall, total crime (Part I and Part II totals) increased by 3.8 percent, according to the summary.
The report shows the city has no homicides in the 2016 reporting period, and one in 2017. That homicide was the Feb. 1 death Nohely Alexandra Martinez Hernandez, 4. Her mother, 20-year-old Iris Hernandez-Rivas has been charged with second-degree murder, and first- and second-degree child abuse.
Other data from the report includes:
- Rape: 62.5 percent decrease (from eight to three)
- Robbery: 25 percent increase (from 12 to 15)
- Aggravated Assault: 72.7 percent increase (from 11 to 19)
- Burglary: 33.3 percent increase (from 24 to 32)
- Larceny: 3.9 percent increase (from 308 to 320)
- Auto Theft: 12.5 percent increase (from eight to nine)
