Gaithersburg Named One of Top Suburbs for Retirement

happy seniorsThe city of Gaithersburg was named one of the “25 Best Suburbs for Retirement in 2014” by Forbes. There were no rankings associated with this list – the suburbs were presented alphabetically.

To qualify, suburbs had to be within 35 miles of a major city. Other selection criteria included median home values of $300,000 or less, a stable economy based on the unemployment rate and job growth rankings, an assessment of the state’s tax climate for retirees, rates of serious crime, presence of hospitals and colleges, air quality, and access to mass transit.

On the Forbes website, the write-up about Gaithersburg noted: “Nineteen miles northwest of Washington and thus outside the Beltway, town of 63,000 has rush-hour rail service to D.C. while sitting near the end of the capitol’s subway system. Hospital and college campuses nearby. Median home price is $270,000. Cost of living is 17% above national average, but D.C.-area economy has low unemployment rate.”

Gaithersburg Mayor Sidney Katz agrees with the report.

“With easy access to an extensive transportation system, enriching cultural and educational programs both locally and regionally, a lively new dining scene, and a number of new neighborhoods currently under construction that suit an active retirement lifestyle, Gaithersburg is an ideal place to spend your entire life,” said Katz.
