Gaithersburg Mayor Signs Letter Opposing FCC’s ‘Restoring Internet Freedom’ Proposal

Gaithersburg Mayor Jud Ashman joined more than 50 other mayors from across the country in signing a letter addressed to the Federal Communications Commission’s Chairman Ajit Pai, opposing the FCC’s recent Restoring Internet Freedom Draft Order proposal.

The FCC’s proposal would eliminate current Net Neutrality protections adopted in 2015 titled the “Open Internet Order.”

In the letter addressed to the FCC, leaders stated “a free open Internet forms the backbone of the 21st Century economy, and as leaders of local communities, we are acutely aware of the threat to education, innovation and economic growth posed by the Proposal.”

The letter was filed on Dec. 7 and signed by 58 mayors and county-elected officials representing more than 27 million people, according to a news release.

“I am proud to join leaders from across the country in an effort to protect consumers and businesses in our communities,” Ashman said in a statement. “The City of Gaithersburg recognizes the benefits that broadband connectivity and access to free and open Internet has in our City and our responsibility to protect consumers residing in Gaithersburg.”
