Gaithersburg Mayor Ashman Looks to Expand City’s Park System, Requests Meeting with CE Leggett (VIDEO)

Gaithersburg Mayor Jud Ashman is asking for a meeting with Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett to discuss acquiring access to the 4.79 acres of existing parkland behind the Montgomery County Public Safety Headquarters at 100 Edison Park Drive. This property is adjacent to Lakelands Park in the city limits of Gaithersburg.

“The City is requesting to enter into an easement to utilize the property and parking lot,” writes Ashman in a letter dated May 8 to Leggett. “The City will provide a certificate of insurance.”

The mayor included some photos (see below) in his letter that, he said, illustrate how the site has currently deteriorated.

“Although in poor condition, there is still a great deal of potential,” Ashman writes. “With some City resources, this park could facilitate outdoor sports practices and games, and may be a prime location for Pickleball.”

So what’s the City’s plan for the property?

“At this time, the City foresees demolishing the existing courts, and then planting/seeding and regrading the grassy surface,” Ashman said. “Depending on the terms of an agreement or memorandum of understanding (MOU), the City could initiate a project to construct new courts in place of the existing ones. The City is willing to take on the refurbishment costs.”

In his letter, Ashman said the surplus property would allow the city’s sport staff to provide more leisure and recreational opportunities for its residents.
