Gaithersburg Couple Wins $1 Million Powerball Prize (PHOTO)
A Gaithersburg couple claimed a $1 million Powerball prize at Maryland Lottery headquarters Friday. The couple has chosen to remain anonymous.
The woman who purchased the winning ticket is described as a wife and mother of four who works in the education field. She posed for a photo holding a check alongside her husband, a lottery official and the Powerball.
After a stop at the Lottery’s Winner’s Circle, they planned to visit the Potomac Shell where the ticket was purchased and hoped to to shake the hand of the employee who sold the ticket in the Aug. 23 drawing. “He wished me good luck,” she said. “It worked!”
According to the Maryland Lottery, the winning ticket was randomly selected by the Lottery terminal.
So what did the Gaithersburg winner do when she learned she had won?
“The first thing I did was say a prayer of thanksgiving,” she said. “Then, I felt sick!”
They hid the winning ticket all over the house until they could bring it to Lottery headquarters, according to a news release.
The couple is making plans now for their big prize, which will boost their retirement fund. Married 35 years this fall, they may do something special for their anniversary, and they plan to financially help their adult children.
According to the Maryland Lottery, this is the second $1 million Powerball win during 2017 in Maryland, and 50 players have won $50,000 Powerball prizes this year. Nine of the $50,000 winners have yet to claim their prizes.
Congrats to the $1 million Powerball winner from last night’s drawing! The winning ticket was sold in Gaithersburg. https://t.co/gRzVowheDI pic.twitter.com/guAgJyRjdO
