Frozen Pipes Burst in Gaithersburg Community (Photos)
This week’s extremely cold temperatures were too much for some water sprinkler pipes inside some condominium units at the Quince Orchard Park community of Gaithersburg.
The frozen pipes burst — some on Jan. 7 and more on Jan. 8 — in some of the brick-front condominiums along Orchard Ridge Drive and Mill Green Avenue.
“All the broken pipes were in the front dormer windows on the upper level,” said Property Manager Richard Skobel of Main Street Property Management.
Skobel was on site on Jan. 7 and Jan. 8 helping residents manage the situation. Although some residents went to area hotels, he said, others stayed in their units.
Cleanup was quick, he noted, and all the units are ready for rebuilding.
He said condominium board members in both buildings now plan to meet to discuss what to do to re-insulate the areas of origin to ensure this doesn’t happen again.
Skobel said he also may send out a flyer with information to inform the area’s condominium residents of what happened and to provide winter-proofing tips because many residents have questions and are worried about the incident.
One thing is certain, this was not an isolated incident. Skobel said managers with his company have responded to similar situations at other properties around the county this week following the extreme drop in temperatures.
